What is 18K Gold Filled Jewelry?

18K gold is known for its rich, vibrant yellow tone and is widely used in gold jewelry across Europe. It contains 75% pure gold. While 14K gold, more commonly used in the United States, contains 58.3% pure gold,
giving it a slightly lighter yellow tone.

Gold filled jewelry contains a thicker layer of gold than gold plated or gold vermeil jewelry. This gold layer is mechanically bonded to a base metal core using heat and pressure.

Because of this construction, gold filled jewelry contains significantly more gold than plated jewelry, making it a reliable middle ground between gold plating and solid gold.

Gold Filled vs. Gold Vermeil: What’s the Difference?

Gold filled jewelry contains a thicker layer of gold than gold plated or gold vermeil jewelry. This gold layer is mechanically bonded to a base metal core using heat and pressure. By U.S. legal standards, 18K gold filled jewelry must contain at least 5% gold by total weight, meaning significantly more gold is used than in plated jewelry.

Gold plated jewelry is created by electroplating a thin layer of gold over a base metal such as brass, copper, or stainless steel. There is no required minimum gold content. Gold vermeil is a specific type of gold plated jewelry that uses sterling silver as its base metal and must have a minimum gold thickness of 2.5 microns.

While all three contain real gold, they differ in how the gold is applied and how much gold is used.

Is Gold Filled Jewelry Real Gold?

Gold filled jewelry does contain real gold, though it is not made entirely of gold like solid gold jewelry. Instead, a thick layer of gold is bonded to a base metal core, creating a material that balances composition, durability, and accessibility.

Because of this, gold filled jewelry offers the look of real gold with more substance than plated alternatives, while remaining more accessible than solid gold.
